Remote shutter cable for EOS Rebel DSLR
The Rebel Digital cameras use a very simple remote cable. You can either buy one from Canon for about $40 or you can spend < $10 and make one. What you'll need are:
  • Project box
  • 2.5mm Stereo plug
  • 2 x momentary push buttons
  • On/Off rocker switch
  • A suitable length of 3-wire cable

The remote is quite simple. The circuitry is all in the camera. To trip the shutter just short the sleeve and the tip of the 2.5mm plug. To set exposure/focus short the sleeve and the ring on the plug. It's that simple. So, I've put two push-buttons on my project box (red and black). One shorts the sleeve/ring and one shorts the sleeve/tip. In parallel with the second (the shutter button) I've put in an on/off rocker for 'bulb' exposures. That's about it.

As with all my stuff I put some velcro on the back to hold it onto a tripod leg.
